St. Patrick’s Day Costume

Let’s face it – no matter your age or the time of year, it is fun to put on a costume! But usually when people think of the costume wearing holidays they think of Halloween or maybe Mardi Gras. However, it’s getting more popular to wear a St. Patricks Day costume! If you never thought of wearing a costume for St. Paddy’s day you may be surprised by the variety of costumes that are available.

Probably the most popular and obvious is a leprechaun costume. There’s the classic leprechaun look with a top hat, red beard and hair and a green suit. Of course there are several variations available now too, such as sexy leprechaun costumes for both men and women.

The most important aspect of your St. Paddy’s Day costume is to wear green or you may get a little black and blue from all the pinches you will surely get. Ever wonder where the tradition of pinching non-green wearing folks on St. Patrick’s Day came from? Turns out it didn’t originate in Ireland but in the United States. In the 1700’s in the Irish colonies of Boston the legend has it that a person will be visible to leprechauns when they are not decked out in green. Being pinched was a way to remind the person to put some green on to protect themselves from the leprechauns.

Another fun option, particularly for the ladies, is a beer garden girl outfit. These have that touch of green but are a cute option if being a leprechaun isn’t your cup of tea.

Of course anything that mentions the Luck of the Irish and includes the term “lucky” in the costume’s name is an excellent choice for St. Paddy’s Day!

Now what should you do if you are not the pre-packaged costume type? Are you stuck just wearing your everyday clothes for St. Patrick’s Day? Of course not! There are a ton of great accessories available that either enhance your St. Patrick’s Day costume or dress up your own outfit. Wearing a St. Patrick’s Day hat is one great option for getting into the spirit – either with or without a full blown costume. For women there are a lot of cute tights and stockings that can put you in an Irish mood. Of you could just get some shamrock glasses, a funny sash, a wig and/or fake beard. Whatever will put you in the Irish spirit is the right choice for you.
